Is it Plain Sailing for Project Boat?

A report in yesterday's Online Financial News suggests all may not be plain sailing for Project Boat, a pan-European utility that promotes itself as benefiting all participants actively involved in European capital markets. The article points out that consortiums of investment banks have a poor delivery record, where key members may fail to agree on key points of development. The journalist says some banks have confirmed privately there was disagreement about fees proposed by the consortium.

As well as the issue of fees, there is speculation about what will happen with Boat after its November launch. Some of its banks have said it should be spun off into Markit and turned it into a for-profit feed after it goes live.

Earlier this year, FTMandate, interviewed industry veterans who discussed the viability of Project Boat and the implications for pricing and availability of data.

Trade Order Management Sales and Account Management - based London

Our client is a US firm and is building their sales presence in Europe. Their technology products in international equity markets are used by asset managers and hedge funds.

We are looking for an Account Manager and New Business Sales Executive. We are particularly interested to hear from executives with experience of selling FIX connectivity, OMS integration & execution management software.

The Account Manager salary would be £60-£80K plus bonus and is a new role for this firm. As our client doesn't have anyone doing this at the moment, you will be first person in. If the Account Manager does well he/she will be able to build and lead a team. For now though the requirement is for someone to be hands on and very much in the coalface seeing and talking with client. The role would be pan-European and so languages are desirable.

For the New Business Sales role we are looking for fluent French as this person will sell to French speaking clients across Europe. Basic salary would be up to £90K plus bonus but very much dependent on the person's sales experience, sales track record and network of contacts.

For a confidential discussion please call Aine Hall on +44 (0)20 7392 2644.

Murdoch Buys Dow Jones

The BBC reports that Murdoch has won his battle to buy US media giant Dow Jones under the following terms cited in their joint press release.

The Guardian yesterday ran an analysis piece surmising what will happen next and discussing the implications for Pearson and the FT. Another newspaper says the Dow Jones coup poses a tough challenge for the FT. The FT itself says Murdoch's acquisition of Dow Jones is less of a bet on newspapers than a move to acquire content that he can then use across the many different media sectors in which he plays: print, television and, increasingly, the internet. Dow Jones takes him for the first time into the financial information business. Overall, demand for such information is expected to grow, fuelled by the growth of financial assets themselves. In one estimate, the McKinsey Global Institute says financial assets worldwide will be worth $214,000bn by 2010, up from $140,000bn in 2005.
